precipitation - 60 min rate

Precipitation, sampled once per hour from an accumulating gauge and converted into an hourly rate. Any phase (liquid or solid) is captured to the extent possible and given as liquid water equivalent. This timeseries is a continuation of measurements taken at the former town station since 2010. The town station was converted into a GEM climate station in 2016.

Variable description
The hourly rainfall rates are derived from the raw bucket weight of the OTT Pluvio2 gauge by applying the 'neutral aggregating filter' (Smith et al. 2019). If the data are missing for a period of time, no attempt is made to attribute the increase in bucket weight over the missing period to a specific point in time. In order for the cumulative sum of the rate-based timeseries to sum up to the correct, recorded bucket weight, a rainfall 'event' may appear at the end of periods of missing values, corresponding to the registered increase in bucket weight over the period. This psuedo-event will be labeled 'suspect' in the quality column and is unlikely to correspond to a real rainfall event. No attempt is currently made to account for bucket evaporation, of which there is likely only a very small amount, since an oil layer in the bucket is used to prevent it.
