Active layer is measured in the vicinity of the Automatic chambers in 'Rylekæret' in the Zackenberg valley. The reported active layer depths are in relation to the ground surface, the position of which changes over the season due to swelling and drying of the peat. Active layer is measured to the top of a metal rod that has been fixed in the permafrost. After the season the active layer in relation to the ground surface is computed based on relative levels between fix metal rods and the ground surface.
Measurements were initiated in 2006. From 2006 - 2010 the active layer was only measured between chamber 1 and 2. In 2011 the active layer was also measured between chamber 5 and 6. From 2012 and onwards measurements have been conducted in the vicinity of each chamber at the site.
No active layer measurements are published for 2014, due to poor data quality.
